Shotgun barrel and/or overall length?
I’m looking to buy my first shotgun and was wondering which barrel length I should get. It’s my first shotgun so I’m probably going to want it to be sort of a universal gun for me (but not for home security, I’ve got pistols for that, so I want to stay away from 18″ barrels).
I’d want to use it for sporting clays, trap, etc. and also just some casual “Tom Knapp style” clay shooting in the woods.
I understand the longer the barrel is the better for trap. How about just for tossing up some clays?
So far I’m looking at barrel lengths between 24″ and 28″ (overall length about 45″-49″). What do you think?
Thanks for your answers in advance. All answers will be helpful in making my decision as long as they are appropriate and logical.
26” and 28” are the most common lengths. Not all shotguns will offer the choice.
28” will swing more smoothly, and offer a longer sighting plane. These are advantages.
I often hunt grouse, so I prefer the 26” barrel, it makes the shotgun just a bit more maneuverable in the woods.
Some reasonably priced shotguns: The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are good pumps. If you want an autoloader, it’s hard to beat a Remington 1100, especially if you can get a good price.
